Connecting: Ufahari girls and kalerwe kids
On the outskirts of Kampala, capital city of Uganda, is the poverty stricken area of Kalerwe. Children living here have very limited opportunities and are exposed to all sorts of unthinkable dangers. We have connected with and have been supporting a youth initiative (Ufahari Girls) and a kids initiative (Kalerwe Kids) both lead by the incredible Mutesi Rachael, to give children and teenagers in her community some shelter and creative space.
In 2018 and 2019, one of our founders along with 2 dancers and another colleague travelled out to Uganda to lead dance workshops for some of these groups. What a blessing to meet and dance with such a wonderfully energetic and loving bunch! Dance crosses language barriers.
We keep in contact with dance classes on Zoom (read more) and are hugely grateful for the support of individuals, dance schools and dancewear retailers in the UK for providing leotards, leggings, skirts and shoes for the children to wear for classes.
Watch below this beautiful and poignant music video Rachael and the Ufahari Girls produced to raise awareness of a serious social issue that effects not just their community but people all over the world.
We are so proud of these girls and continue to encourage them to keep dancing and creating to get their voices heard.
Can you help? We collect donations of dance wear (particularly skirts and leggings) as well as every day clothes for these children. They often arrive hungry so Rachael and the other volunteers try to provide lunch on Thursdays when the groups meet. Any contribution to this is hugely appreciated.
